Director’s Lab in Amsterdam

We look back on a very successful Director’s Lab, that took place in Amsterdam during the Imagine Film Festival. In three long and intense days, from 17 to 19 April, the 16 participants took part in a busy programme. A large part of the lab was dedicated to script development, through one-on-one sessions with script advisors Chris Mitchell and Atso Pärnänen, and through exchange sessions between the participants in which they discussed each others projects.

In addition to the work on the screenplays, there were inspiring talks from producer Brendan McCarthy, VFX specialist Dennis Kleyn and storyboarder Temple Clark. Mexican director Issa López discussed her career and her film Tigers Are Not Afraid (which ended up winning the Black Tulip Award at the Imagine Festival) and The Endless directors Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead hosted a mentoring session with the directors.

After their daytime programme, participants also attended public events of the Imagine Film Festival, including masterclasses by Romke Faber and a panel about Kick-Ass Women in the film industry, and a screen adaptation talk by US horror legend Mick Garris. At the Imagine Fantastic Mixer on the last day, participants met the Dutch industry and enjoyed some well deserved drinks.

The lab brought together eight projects with great potential and linked the makers to top quality professionals. The feedback from all parties has been great and the teams are preparing themselves for the next stage – the Producer’s Lab in July!
